Gravity Falls: The Reckoning

Well I'm bored and stuck at home, so here's a dumb idea that's been rattling around my head for a while; which Hunter: The Reckoning (HtR) Creeds would the main cast from Gravity Falls be imbued as? Timely, I know, as HtR has been out of print for over 10 years and Gravity Falls finished up in 2016, but this is what my brain does in isolation, apparently. For the uninitiated, HtR is roleplaying game from White Wolf, set in the "World of Darkness", where players take on the roles of ordinary people suddenly awakened to the reality of the world and given powers to combat the monsters that haunt it. Characters are divided into "Creeds", which determine their outlook on the Hunt, though these affiliations are far less rigid than the "Clans", "Tribes" and "Traditions" of other World of Darkness games.

Gravity Falls is a two-season animated series from Disney, written by Alex Hirsch, of Rick & Morty fame, telling the story of a summer vacation spent by 12 year-old twins Dipper and Mable with their Great Uncle (Grunkle) Stan, in the titular town of Gravity Falls. Grunkle Stan runs the "Mystery Shack", a tourist trap selling a supernatural experience to the gullible, but something sinister lurks under the surface of this small town. Gravity Falls is an excellent series, and available on Disney+ for those wanting something to binge in social isolation. So who are the characters of Gravity Falls and what does their approach to the supernatural tell us about their potential Creeds? Well, thanks to social distancing and the nerdyness of my brain, I can answer that for all the people who have never asked.

Dipper - Visionary
What Dipper Pines wants, more than anything, is knowledge and understanding, especially of the Supernatural, making him an idea candidate for a Visionary. When confronted by a problem, Dipper's reaction is to research it, not only for his benefit, but also to educate where possible, though that rarely works out for him. His brains tend to make Dipper the de-facto "leader" of the gang, a role that Visionaries often find themselves in.

Mable - Redeemer
From sexy vampires to exotic mer-men and cloned Boy Bands, Mable seeks meaning in relationships with the creatures she meets, be they romantic, friendly or hostile. Mable sees the good in everything and everyone, which can lead her into trouble, but also carries her through the darkest times. As such, the only Creed which makes sense for Mable is Redeemer, which focuses on not only seeing the best in monsters, but protecting those she cares about from danger.

Soos - Innocent
And what else could kind and simple Soos be, but an Innocent? Far from being a unintelligent, Soos is highly-skilled in a variety of areas, but doesn't sweat what he doesn't understand. Even more than Mable, Soos is unable to see the bad in people and creatures, often to his detriment. When the chips are down, however, Soos joins in the fight without hesitation, wanting to protect his surrogate family with everything he has at his disposal.

Grunkle Stan - Defender
From the start, Grunkle Stan has one goal, to reunite his family, and nothing will get in his way, not even the law or the supernatural. In HtR, Defenders have a "charge" a thing, place or person they're protecting, and Stan's is clearly his family. Like all Zeal Creeds, Defenders, and Stan, can lay the smack-down when they want to, as evidenced by his proficiency when battling zombies; Stan is also an accomplished con-man and thief, a valuable team-member to be sure.

Wendy - Avenger
Probably the only member of the team to regularly think of arming herself, Wendy is clearly a Zeal Creed, and given her, very quickly, taking over a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the fury of an Avenger is the best fit. Thanks to growing up the only female child in a lumberjack family, Wendy is physically capable, strong and never backs down from a fight; thankfully, she lets cooler heads prevail often and never gets herself in too deep.

So that's the dumb thing that's been rattling around my brain lately, hop you enjoyed it.
